If you wish to take examinations you can. Entries are submitted three times a year. All instrumental categories are included.

Practical Examinations

Some teachers will specify which examination board they prefer. Popular examination boards include The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity Guildhall School of Music and London College of Music. Grades are from 1-8. They introduce students to exams and when you take Grade 8 you reach a standard that may take musicians to music college and a professional career.

Theory Examinations

There is a full complement of written examinations in the Theory of Music at each grade. They aim to provide a solid foundation in music literacy, including notation conventions, melody, rhythm and harmony. At the higher levels these qualifications also assess basic knowledge of musical history, form and the capabilities of various instruments (e.g. range). It is necessary (for some examination boards) that the musician achieve an exam pass at Grade 5 Theory in order to progress to the higher practical grades.
